contaminated urban public surfaces in the centre
Novi Sad, Serbia
As part of the Open Design Studio 03 Project, an exhibition of works by graphic design and new media students from Novi Sad Academy of Arts was organized and held on Wednesday 1.7.2009. The work was showcased on the outdoor advertising space situated at Narodnih Heroja 3, Novi Sad. The project idea originated from the necessity to resolve some of the ongoing visual culture problems of Novi Sad: unavailability of outdoor advertising spaces, reasoning behind the promotion of instant capitalism, overall pollution of the urban environment by application of advertising materials at inappropriate places (trees, building facades, poles and other areas not intended for advertising purposes)

Involvement of Open Design Studio in ID exhibition: Ideology of Design is based on play, collaboration and experiment. Two projects, that will be presented to the public are based on notions – psychological pressure, deadline, speed and identity – represent ideologies that define design as open and collaborative discipline, but also show the phenomena of contemporary society.
Psychological pressure, speed and deadline shape design and the designer in the sense of fulfilling constantly increasing demands of industry based on fast capitalistic development. Identity and its need of precise defining on the market show that graphic design through corporative identities became not only carrier of individual characteristics but carrier of ideology of corporations themselves.

COLLABORATION
workshops, presentations, lectures
April 13-22, 2007
Bratislava, Slovakia
Premiere appearance of the Open Design Studio project under the name of Open Design Studio 01 took place in 2007 at the Multiplace Festival of Network Cultures in Bratislava, which was held as part of the Infocenter Festival at A4 Space. During the festival, the project prioritized student education through active workshop involvement and lectures on the topics of collaboration within the graphic design realm. The name of the Multplace festival clearly indicates that the aim was to bring together young and thriving domestic and foreign graphic designers and present their work by means of the internet and new media. Workshop topics also revolved around the concepts of networking and collaboration in general, and were eventually published in the festival’s official magazine/gazette.
